Presentation of research results by Polina Palash

Polina Palash, TRANSMIC PhD candidate, presented her research results and a related paper “The other side of need: moving resources from ‘back home’” in Maastricht and in Florence. She presented in Maastricht in April 2017 in the MACIMIDE workshop on Citizenship, Migration and Development at the Faculty of Law of Maastricht University, where her paper was discussed by Zana Vathi and Karlijn Haagsman. In Florence, together with Ester Serra Mingot she co-organised in May 2017 the panel on “Transnational Social Protection”, presenting the same paper which was discussed by Katarzyna Grabska and Simone Castellani.

The paper, written together with Virginie Baby-Collin, describes the topic of financial resources moved from Ecuador by families of Ecuadorian origin living in Europe to secure their needs in European countries (Spain, England, Germany and Sweden) which can be crucial to cope with social risks. “Reverse” money flows originate from diverse sources among which remittances from migrants’ families as well as their own financial means derived from properties, State entitlements and temporal job in Ecuador. The bi-directional observation of social protection provisions in transnational families has been fundamental to acknowledge such under-researched flows.
